The Civic Institute held a seminar on the future of the Czech conservative politics and political parties at the ODS Parliamentary Group office in the Deputies‘ Chamber of the Czech Parliament on December 6, 2007. The future and fate of Civic Democrats and Christian Democrats were discussed there at the seminar. After the introductory remarks by Roman Joch, director of Civic Institute, prof. Miroslav Novák, rector (president) of the private university Cevro Institute, maintained, that the only chance of center-right parties‘ victory in the next elections could happen only by a way of a pre-election coalition of parties running together. That claim was disputed by Mr. Jan Hartl, director of the polling company STEM, who countered that voters did not see it in that light and would find a pre-election coalition repulsive. Analysts Matyáš Zrno (Civic Institute) and Ladislav Mrklas (Cevro Institute) analyzed prospects of Christian Democrats and Civic Democrats, respectively. Last but not least, active politicians Mr. Marek Benda, MP and Mr. Pavel Pleva, MP, contributed their own views in forms of a presentation and comments, respectively. The seminar was chaired by Mr. Martin Komárek, a commentator at major Czech daily Dnes.
The formal seminar was followed by an informal discussion in one of Parliament‘s wine-cellars.
