Population Implosion in Europe: Catastrophe or Challenge?
Emauzy Monastery, Prague, 11.03.2003
Anne Marie Libert from Louvain University (Belgium) was invited by the Civic Institute to articulate the immense challenges presented by the present population implosion in Europe and the consequences that it may have for the sustainability and progress of Western modern societies. The social, economic and cultural aspects of this question are vital to governments and societies in CEE countries.
Ms. Libert demonstrated the demographic decline occurring in Europe on the basis of statistical analysis and tried to explain its causes and likely consequences. Her seminar raised questions about how to formulate social policy that can adjust and prepare for actual and future population numbers. The audience included university students, professors and professionals from areas related to the topic.
