Latin America’s Shift to the Left
Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prague, Czech R, 13.04.2006
The increase of forces hostile to democracy in Latin America should trouble European leaders, especially in nations that have themselves suffered from communist ideology. The seminar highlighted the growth of leftist regimes in Latin America, including the cooperation of Hugo Chavez with Fidel Castro, and evaluated left-wing presidents in Bolivia, Brasil and Chile. Likewise the resurgence of Sandinistas in Nicaragua was considered.
EICEE’s Civic Insitute in Prague was proud to welcome Mr. Tomas Pojar, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, as one of the main speakers. Mr. Pojar is recognized as a leader in human rights and pro-democracy efforts in Cuba and Belarus. Professor Vladimir Nalevka also participated on the conference. The eminent Czech historian of the 20th Century and Cold War period is an expert on the Cuban missile crisis of 1962.
